Startup Funding Is Down but Maturing

Nigerian startups raised approximately $410 million in the first three quarters of 2024, down from the peak of $1.7 billion in 2021. This is not a collapse. It is a correction. The easy money era is over and what remains is more disciplined, more focused on revenue, and more sustainable. Fintech still accounts for roughly 60% of all deals. Healthtech and edtech are growing their share.

Developer Count Is Rising Fast

Nigeria now has an estimated 700,000 software developers, making it one of the largest developer communities on the continent. Internet Penetration Crossed 50%

As of 2025, Nigeria has crossed the 50% internet penetration mark for the first time. With a population over 220 million, this means over 110 million Nigerians are online. Mobile internet accounts for 95% of access. This creates enormous opportunity for digital businesses but also means the average user has high data cost sensitivity, which shapes product decisions significantly.

Remote Work Is Establishing Itself

The share of Nigerian tech workers in fully remote roles has stabilised at around 35% after the post-pandemic adjustment. International remote work, where Nigerians work for companies in Europe, North America, or the Middle East, accounts for a growing share of high-income tech employment. Dollar or euro salaries received by Nigerian remote workers represent a meaningful economic force.
